Going back a 1,000 years, songs were a way to spread news of the day, and to remember major events and stories. The wandering minstrel and madrigal types were more than guys with lutes! They captured the times and we still refer to songs written long ago to view history. The tradition of writing of love and our times continues today — but songs from long ago have endured and are still with us.
Terry Ulick began writing novelizations of classic folk ballads in 2023 with The Fair, Wild Mountain Thyme, 3 Ravens, and Tender Maidens. The books are literary works inspired by the songs of the same names. Some copies can still be found on Amazon and Kindle Editions will remain available.
With music and lyrics by Terry Ulick and Mystic, they are creating new folk ballads — and reimagining beloved folk ballads that respect the songs yet make them tell the stories as if writng about the world today. The first album of “realized” songs, SAD CASES AND DEATH DIRGES, is a shock, a wonder, and a joy. It’s songs you know, but as contemporary as rap or trap music now. The first release, a new take on IN THE PINES. Called, AT THE PINES, the “girl” is gone all night — a dance club call The Pines. Her not-so-nice guy can only ask the same question asked a century ago. “My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me, tell me where you been last night.” The answer? At the pines.
